Wondering What to Do About Kindergarten?

Last week we lifted up options for Pre-K in our neighborhood. This week, let’s take a look at Kindergarten.

If your child will turn 5 by September 1, 2015, he or she is eligible to enroll in Kindergarten in the state of Georgia. Fun fact: Kindergarten attendance is not mandatory in the state of Georgia!

There are three options for Kindergarten in Grant Park. Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School (ANCS), Wesley International Academy, and Parkside Elementary.

ANCS is a K-8 charter school with two campuses. The elementary campus (Neighborhood Charter School) on Grant Street serves kindergarten through fifth grade, and the middle school campus (Atlanta Charter Middle School) is located in Ormewood Park. Both campuses are open to students zoned for the Atlanta Public Schools. Admission is granted based on public lottery.

Enrollment for the 2015-2016 year begins on February 9 and ends at 3:30pm on March 9. The lottery will be held on Thursday, March 26 at 6:00pm. For more information about ANCS, consider attending one of their information meetings on Thursday February 19 from 6:30-7:30pm or Saturday March 7 from 9-10am.

Wesley International Academy is also K-8 charter school. With one campus, its mission is to develop students who are global citizens and academically competitive by international standards of excellence. Wesley provides its students with a world-class International Baccalaureate program, Mandarin Chinese language instruction in its daily curriculum, and single-gender classrooms. Open to all students within the APS district, admission to Wesley is also granted based on lottery.

Enrollment is currently open for Wesley and closes Tuesday, March 3. The lottery will be held on March 3 from 6-7:00pm. If you are interested in more information about Wesley, there will be an open house for prospective parents on Feb. 11 from 6:00-7:00pm. Please RSVP!

Parkside Elementary is a diverse community school that serves students from Grant Park, Ormewood Park, Cabbagetown, Summerhill, & Boulevard Heights. Parkside serves children in Kindergarten through fifth grade, offering a curriculum that includes Spanish, Orchestra, Band, and an award-winning Health & Wellness Program. Parkside also offers an after-school enrichment program that includes ballet, drama, chess, & karate.

Choosing the right school can be a daunting task, but remember, you can always reach out to other Grant Park parents with questions on our new forums!
